What are we studying, and why are we hoping to make improvements on Madera Street?

The Madera Street Improvement Project will help make Madera Street safer for everyone who travels between Massachusetts Avenue and 69th Street. As part of the project, we will study how people get around, how fast cars go, and where collisions have happened so we can better understand the safety needs for all users of Madera Street, including people who walk, people who ride bicycles, people who use transit, and vehicles.

Project Background 

The project area is located along a 0.6-mile section of Madera Street between Massachusetts Avenue and 69th Street. Nearly 3,000 car trips are made along this section of the street on an average day, with some cars traveling up to 60 miles per hour. This portion of Madera Street is also home to San Altos Elementary School. Once complete, the project will improve safety and mobility for everyone. 

We are currently studying the following solutions:

• A raised crosswalk and flashing lights at Ramon Street 
• A roundabout at Ramon Street 
• A four-way stop at Ramon Street 
• Travel lane narrowing 
• Bike lanes
• Bike lanes separated by a raised curb
• Improved street lighting 
• Street trees
• Accessible curb ramps 
• Curb extensions

Please note that no decisions about improvements have been made, as we are in the early stages of design.
